Startup Defaults in DEFAULT.TLP

When Time Line for Windows is run, it uses internally coded defaults to set its startup configuration for window formatting, recalculation method, page setup, and other items. However, these internal defaults can be overridden with a file called DEFAULT.TLP.

DEFAULT.TLP is a standard Time Line for Windows schedule. It is created by the user just like any other schedule. When DEFAULT.TLP is present in the Time Line for Windows Working Directory (per Program Item Properties), Time Line for Windows reads it during startup, then uses the settings contained therein rather than its internal defaults. This includes any setting that is saved with a schedule file, such as fonts and colors formatting, Page Setup, and even tasks! Generally speaking, it is not a good idea to save tasks into DEFAULT.TLP, unless that set of tasks is expected to appear in every schedule thereafter.

Note that on startup, the active schedule is "Untitled," even though the settings in DEFAULT.TLP were used. In order to make additional changes to the defaults, the user must choose "File/Save As..." and specify the name "DEFAULT.TLP" explicitly. In this way the defaults are somewhat protected from accidental alteration. For near-perfect protection, just set the Read-only bit to on on the DEFAULT.TLP file.
